    Do you expect any fruits in any of the upcoming years?

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai 4 дня назад

      Yes, but no. It has produced 1 flower in the past, but for some reason it didn't last long. so it is old enough now to flower/fruit ... the issue is i prune it often so its not really going to get the chance to develop. If i just left it alone all year it would probably fruit

  • @tomekkrawcu
    @tomekkrawcu 5 дней назад

    I see that you also have hard water (scale forms), the traces are visible on the trunk base. Do you have any method to remove these traces from the base of the trunk?

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai 4 дня назад

      The water here is soft, but maybe it is from before when i did live in a hard area. Also this tree is watered about 98% from the rain these days. anyway, to get ride of it, use a toothbrush and vinegar, just be careful it doesnt get into the roots. i'd just dampen the toothbrush and do a little bit a time, then try and wash it off by holding the tree upside down so it washes away from the roots. (this will remove moss too)

    Could you tie a string around the lower root plane? That would maybe prevent them from taking over and insentivise the tree to put more energy in the upper roots

    • @BackGardenBonsai

    It feels like that the rootball was so thick that it became hard to get water in the soil, especially the inside.

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai 11 дней назад

      potentially, but then this would have been an issue over the summer and the signs would all be there. There where plenty of roots, but no more than any other tree, soil was also normal levels of moist and loose. The problem happened over winter, so potentiality a cold weather thing, but i think what other people are saying here about how this species just seems to randomly do this type of thing is more likely the issue ...which is not what i want to hear as it probably means this species is not good long term

  • @sueb1317
    @sueb1317 12 дней назад

    Had the same thing happen to a couple other species last year - so random! All you can do is move forward. If it happens again with the same tree, there might be something genetically making in unfit for bonsai conditions. Fingers crossed!

    I think lilacs unfortunately just do this. I see this happen with lilacs in the ground all the time, where the older shoots die off periodically. In fact you often see people doing it intentionally, ie cutting out the older shoots to encourage the newer shoots which brings on better health and more blooms. It may just be a battle you will fight continuously bro, but I guess time will tell.

      close the bag at the start to keep the air ...well more importantly the moisture in. when they grow you will need to start opening the bag, so they can grow in a more normal climate. the bag basically a mini green house, so it doesnt need to be airtight or anything, its just to help keep things humid.

    Happy to have landed on this page and series .. I received a small pomegranate early this spring (Vancouver Canada) and was NOT told it wasn't acclimated to outdoors, so after a couple of weeks of putting it outside for progressive lengths of time, I left it out. All the leaves turned and it became a few twigs on a stump in a week. I saw how hard you hacked back the tree and I thought, "Well, it will either come back OR I need to find someone local with seeds." To my joy, both happened! I have 40 seeds germinating as we speak and one branch of the little tree is sending out shoots under my LED lights like nothing happened. Going to see where the little guy decides it wants to go, but for now, I'm looking towards an interesting shohin-styled pom for my 'accidental' group of trees. Thanks for the great advice and videos.

    Love it! Trunk has a really cool shape, and quite enjoy the leaves. A squirrel donated a conker tree to me last year so potted it up this spring - can't let you have all the fun! I'm experimenting with some vigorous growers (i.e. junk trees) by doing yearly heavy root pruning, follower by rest periods. My hope is that is this will reduce the vigour enough to shorten the internodes during early development. Who knows - may end up with the opposite lol!

    Looking good! Even my garden bay tree doesn't wake up til early May, and then, I only prune away crowded or extremely long branches. Seems to need light inside the tree to say healthy. I'm sure this repot should give it a great start for this growing season.

    I took a bit of a risk with my Laurel but found it to be Hardy. Late April I removed every lead once buds started to swell. It responded really well. It took a few weeks to kick in but now it has a thick crop of fresh smaller leaves.

    Ah what a shame, it was looking great! Hopefully you can make something cool out of it. I just came across this series of videos as I've just got into bonsai and dug up a snowberry fron the garden and got it potted up. From your videos it looks like the tree is basally dominant, would you agree? I like seeing the progressions you've done, so many videos on youtube just show a snapshot in time and I want to see how it develops, hope you keep making them!

      Cheers, yeah it annoying, but it happens. As for being basally, i think so. it does usually push a lot of shoots out from down at the bottom of the trunk, so id say it is. and yeah, i like to see the whole timeline, not a quick look every 4 years lol, so i just make the videos that way :)

    Iv had a couple of private cuttings for at least 2 years now and they’re still matchstick thin! Do you strike cuttings from hard wood?

      this was just a twig snapped off some ones hedge as i walked past their house lol. it in November. but they are slow to thicken. you have to let them really grow out, like ridiculously long, and even then they are slow to thicken. if you want the real beefy ones, get an old hedge that is being removed. they are old, but exactly what we want.
